4 Mindfulness Skills That Will Transform Your Life and Work

TRIGGER YOUR SOOTHING SYSTEM Summary: When it comes to real-time stress reduction, the ability to breathe diaphragmatically is the difference between walking the walk and talking the talk. Expert tip: The out-breath is most important for ‘flicking on’ your relaxation response.
TREAT YOURSELF AS A FRIEND Summary: The quality of your inner conversation impacts your resilience more than any other variable. The benefits of learning to treat yourself as a friend is hard to over-emphasise. Expert tip: Treat yourself the way you would friend or colleague. If you wouldn’t say it to them, don’t say it to yourself. Realise also that being a proper friend is a multifaceted undertaking. As a first-step learn to observe the quality of your internal dialogue without prejudice.
SAY ‘YES’ STRESS Summary: There is no escaping the occurrence of stressful events. Acknowledging stress in the right way is the key to reducing the distorting impacts of emotional reactivity on decision making and communication. Expert tip: Get good at being able to acknowledge stress in the moment. Learn to describe stressful experiences to yourself using the ‘green, blue, red’ system.
REFRESH YOUR FOCUS Summary: Regard your faculty of attention as an important resource . It can be eroded by misuse and enhanced by applying common sense and learning mindfulness techniques. Expert tip: Do the 3R’s practice in-conjunction with the 4-Breaths exercise a few times every day to maintain attentional clarity.
